Press release: Identification of major global environmental problems in Eastern Europe. The ecological aspect of using nuclear technologies: pros and cons of using nuclear energy

Eastern European Association the Greens (EEAG) hold a press conference in Brussels to highlight main environmental problems disturbing Eastern Europeаn countries. Among them is energy problem that affects climate changes. First of all it is use of coal which is the source of greenhouse gases emission, and danger of refuse from nuclear energy. During the press conference, the study “The main environmental problems of Eastern Europe. The ecological aspect of using nuclear technologies: pros and cons of using nuclear energy ” was presented.

According to the participants of the press conference – the members of the EEAG, the countries of Eastern Europe are not sufficiently represented in joint EU research programs, in international discussions on climate change and in regional initiatives. Most researches on the topic of climate change only covers the regions of Eastern Europe in a limited way. That is why representation of these countries and their participation in ecological dialog is so vital.

In addition, the EEAG see the topic of nuclear energy is very important, especially danger of its widespread “boycott”. Gas, oil, coal have already caused and continue to cause damage to the environment. That is why practically “boycott” of nuclear energy will also have its consequences. At the last UN conference on Climate in Bonn, it was stipulated that at least 15 states are ready to join the international alliance Powering Past Coal, which calls for a gradual refusal to use coal in electricity generation until 2030. Unfortunately, most of Eastern Europe countries are not in this list.  The next UN climate conference in 2018 will take place in the Polish city of Katowice (it is considered one of the most polluted European cities)

Most ecologists say that the combination of renewability, efficiency of energy sources and responsible use of nuclear energy will allow us to switch to non-carbon energy sources and save us from both global warming.

In terms of land use, nuclear energy has significant advantages, since the need for relatively smaller amounts of fuel means that smaller land plots will be damaged or destroyed by the construction of mines, factories and related structures. The cost of nuclear energy is competitive and stable. The cost of nuclear fuel is a small part of the cost of nuclear kilowatt-hours, while the cost of energy derived from fossil fuels (especially oil and gas) depends entirely on market conditions.

This information should be correctly informed to people, avoiding emotional assessment in the field of nuclear policy and strategy of the states using this type of fuel.
