Banana leaves as a substitute for plastic

Asia is playing an active part in saving the planet, and have recently presented a natural alternative to plastic packaging—banana leaves.

While leaf-wrapped food isn’t anything new in Asia, it is unusual to see this traditional, biodegradable approach used in supermarkets.

The first chain to adopt the idea is Rimping Supermarket in Chiang Mai, Thailand. When Perfect Homes Chiangmai visited the store, the delighted team quickly snapped some images of the eco-friendly packaging and shared them on social media. Soon, their post went viral, with more than 3.5 million views and 16,000 shares. A number of people even tagged their own local supermarkets, urging them to take a leaf out of Rimping’s book.
